Scientists have discovered a likely cause for the AstraZeneca Plc Covid-19 vaccination causing blood clots after the vaccine’s usage was restricted worldwide to avoid the unusual adverse effect.
According to a study published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances by scientists from US and UK universities and Astra, the interaction between the vaccine and a protein known as platelet factor 4 could be behind occurrences of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome.
According to the company, the research isn’t conclusive.
The Astra vaccine, which was co-developed with the University of Oxford, has been slowed around the world by a probable link between the shot and rare incidents of blood clots, with the UK restricting its use to persons over 40 and the US yet to approve it. In May, German researchers proposed that the side effect was caused by the adenovirus vector used in the vaccination.
Clots have been more common after the first dose than the second, with 426 cases reported to the UK regulator from more than 24 million first and second doses administered as of Nov. 17.
“While the research isn’t conclusive, it does provide fascinating insights, and AstraZeneca is looking into ways to use these findings as part of our efforts to eliminate this exceedingly rare adverse effect,” the company said in a statement.
The business stressed that the discovered mechanism does not prove that it is the cause of the unusual thrombosis and that most people with PF4 antibodies do not form clots. Covid-19 has a substantially higher risk of blood clots than any of the other vaccinations.
